At Mission Central on August 2, we celebrated what God has brought about since Miracle Month began. It was a joyous day as we gathered with Bishop Jane Allen Middleton to reflect on the blessings of Mission Central, to do a prayer walk through the warehouse, and to join in a perimeter prayer walk around Mission Central, praying for this Holy Ground that God has led Central Pennsylvania Conference to manage for God’s mission ministry. A UMNS Commentary, By Bishop Timothy W. Whitaker,* Aug. 21, 2008 If someone were to ask you “Why should I be a Christian?” what would you say?
I cannot think of a more challenging question for a Christian. It makes us wonder if we have anything to say to a person who is not a Christian that would at least encourage him or her to consider becoming one. It also makes us think about why we ourselves are Christians. Whenever we talk with a non-Christian, it is more important to witness than to convince. We should listen to his or her story and, when we hear some question that comes from that person's experience, then we may share how the Gospel of Jesus Christ has enabled us to respond to that question in our own lives. We cannot argue anyone into faith in Jesus Christ. [read more]

“The United Methodist Church should be celebrated, and frankly, for good reason,” said Harrisburg’s Mayor Stephen R. Reed in his address to the delegates and leadership of the Northeastern Jurisdiction at its quadrennial session at the Harrisburg Hilton and Whitaker Center’s Sunoco Theater. “The United Methodist Church has been proactive in fostering facilities and programs in the places, in the neighborhoods of this nation where acute needs exist,” he continued.
